When you are suffering from sinus pain and pressure, it can make you feel as though your head is literally about to explode. While logically you know this is not possible, the pressure coming from within your head and face is so profound that you cannot fathom even moving your head for fear that the pain will worsen. While you may have tried standard pain killers and allergy medications to treat your sinus pain, you may not have considered the various natural, home remedies you can try to rid yourself of your sinus headaches and other sinus pain. Learn the available home treatment options and give them a try the next time you feel weighed down by unbearable sinus pain and pressure.

Saline Nasal Irrigation

Oftentimes, your sinus pain is directly linked to a persistent nasal congestion. To help remedy this congestion, you can try a simple saline nasal irrigation technique.

First, you will need a device to use in the administration of the saline solution. This can be a neti pot or any kind of squeeze bottle with an applicator tip. To create a saline solution at home, all you need is hot water and a little table salt.

Simply combine a cup of hot water with half a teaspoon of salt. If you prefer, you can use up to a whole teaspoon of the table salt. Make sure the salt dissolves completely, and then add the solution to your application device.

Pour the solution slowly into one nostril, and tilt your head to allow it to flow out of the other nostril. Repeat going the opposite direction. This can relieve your nasal congestion which in turn can reduce sinus pressure and pain.

Give Yourself A Steam Facial

Sinus pain and pressure can often stem from a lack of humidity in the air. The dryness can irritate nasal passages and sinuses building up congestion and pressure.

To quickly relieve yourself of this problem, you can give yourself a steam facial. First you will need to boil a pot of water. Once the water has begun to boil, remove it from the heat and place it on a heat-resistant surface. Drape a hand towel or cloth over your head and lean over the hot water (but do not touch it).

Allow the steam to engulf you for about 5 to 10 minutes. Take deep, cleansing breaths as you do so. Once you have completed your steam treatment, you will feel immediate relied of sinus pressure and pain.

Eat Something Spicy

Spicy food can quickly clear up congestion and relieve even the most severe sinus pain. If you are feeling brave and desperate, you can bite right into a fresh jalapeno (or other pepper that is equally as spicy). If you do this, take a small bite to start with so you do not overdo it and burn your mouth. Also keep a glass of milk on hand in case the spice gets too much for you.

Otherwise, you can just eat a spicy meal, or add a dash of wasabi or hot sauce to your plate. If you start to make spicy food a more prominent part of your diet, you may even be able to avoid the return of severe sinus pain and pressure in the future.

As you can see, there are natural remedies you can use at home to quickly and effectively relieve your sinus pain and pressure. A sinus headache can knock you out for days at a time if left untreated, so go ahead and try these methods the next time you begin to feel that pain and pressure. You have nothing to lose but your sinus discomfort. Talk to your local doctor, such as someone from Allergy & Asthma Clinics of Fox Valley, for more information.
